Book Review: Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour

Amy & Roger's Epic Detour

Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour by Morgan Matson
This isn’t the sort of book I usually go for but after reading some good reviews I decided to give it a go. And I’m so glad I did!! Here’s a quick summary of the story- After Amy’s dad dies in a car accident, her mum moves across America and asks Amy to drive their car across. But she doesn’t drive after the accident- enter Roger. The rest of the book is taken up with their road trip across America, complete with receipts, playlists and photos. They go from California to the East Coast via Yosemite National Park (with bear warnings!), the ‘loneliest road in America’ and Graceland (Elvis country).
This book was just so atmospheric, you got so used to her sitting in the passenger seat and him driving, playing twenty questions and eating from fast food restaurants. You could imagine every place they went to as though you were there too. It was amazing. They met up with other characters along the way, each of them seeming real with their own personalities. Some of these scenes didn’t seem as good as the rest of the book as I just loved the road trip part so much!! But when I looked back, they all added up to the journey.
Overall, I give this book like 5/5 stars. I’m definitely going to be reading it lots- it’s my new favourite summer read! And it makes me want to go on an awesome road trip with an awesome guy!
The author: this is her debut novel but it certainly does not show. She has also taken three roads trips across America, including all the places she has written about so she definitely knows what she’s talking about!
P.S The book is less than £5 on amazon.co.uk
